Bow Thruster

A Bow Thruster is a propulsion system with the purpose of manoeuvring the bow of a vessel sideways (transversal). It allows the captain to turn the vessel to port or starboard during mooring and docking without using the main propulsion. Even the most restricted areas. It can also be executed as a stern thruster.

The propeller that generates the thrust can be powered by an electric motor, hydraulic motor or diesel engine via a right angle gearbox. The driving parts are assembled as one bow thruster or stern thruster system by means of a tunnel structure. This tunnel structure is built into the bow or stern part of the ship’s hull.
